The Great Designer Workplace

During daytime I work in an inspiring old converted, cigarette factory. This is quite a contrast with my work at home (evenings & weekends), where I sit next to the box with my daughter. My space consists  of only an old oak desk and a 24 inch screen. I don’t surround my space with things that could distract me while working (well – except my daughter).

This got me thinking about how the space you work in can inspire you. I contacted a few designers and asked them if they found their office inspiring. Below is the result.

Trapped in Suburbia

- I really like that name – have a gallery in their office!Trapped in Suburbia They already collected art and this was a way to share their art with other people. It became a meeting place for like-minded. Their suggestion to you: Let your imagination run wild and do not let yourself be constrained by conventions.

Booreiland

BooreilandThey work in one big open space. They have choosen for low cabinets so everybody can see each other and have a overview of the entire place. Furthermore the try to have as many plants as possible. This gives a warm and healthy ambience. And they chose a combination of industrial (concrete floors and walls) and classical (teak tables), which makes the place fashionable but cosy.
Booreiland-2
Booreiland made these suggestions to other designers:

  • Try to put up a magnet wall / whiteboard, so when you have an idea you can immediately post it on the wall.
  • Don’t try to cut back on your workplace. You have to work there the entire week! And a plus for professionalism when you can invite clients at your place.
  • Get good lighting. Nothing can be so bad as TL light in a system ceiling. Lighting is the number 1 moodmaker.

Some designers also gave some good comments. I wanted to share those with you as well.

Franz Jeitz

Franz has always a sketchpad by hand to scribble down ideas and make quick sketches of whatever springs to his mind. Furthermore he owns a large collection of design magazines and books which mostly are spread out on the floor. Ever since he came to London he was collecting well-designed flyers and brochures which form a great inspirational collage on his wall. Last but not least he always listen to music when working, though this is not a physical item it does inspire him a lot.

David Airey

David takes the inspiration to another level: He tries to surround himself with people who are smarter than him.

Walvis & Mosmans

Walvis and MosmansThey have a caravan in their office, where their head designer works. This enables him to get more focused on the job at hand.

How about your workspace. What do your prefer? A clean place or a cluttered one? With which items do you surround yourself.
